How to Make Homemade Boozy Butterbeer

One of my favorite treats at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the iconic Butterbeer. It’s the one thing I get every single time I visit the theme park. Unfortunately, we can’t be at the Wizarding World every time we get a craving for the delicious Butterbeer. So I decided to create a Butterbeer recipe for everyone to be able to make and enjoy at home.

The recipe I created, I like to call “Boozy Butterbeer” since it’s an alcoholic version just like how they described Butterbeer in the Harry Potter books. However, you can easily omit the alcohol to make a Butterbeer that people of all ages can enjoy! What I love most about it is that it’s so light and refreshing. I let two of my Harry Potter loving friends try my Butterbeer recipe, and they both agreed that it was delicious!

Butterbeer Ingredients

Here are all of the ingredients that you will need to make the Boozy Butterbeer:

Cream Soda
Butter Extract
Cool Whip
Marshmellow Creme
Butterscotch Schnapps (omit for a non-alcoholic version)
Butterscotch or Caramel Syrup (optional)

*Please disregard the Butterscotch morsels in picture above. My grocery stores were out of Butterscotch and Caramel Syrup. So I tried substituting Butterscotch morsels, which I do not recommend.

How to Make the Butterbeer Topping

The topping is always my favorite part of Butterbeer at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. So I knew I had to recreate the sweet and delicious mixture. The three ingredients you will need to make the Butterbeer topping are cool whip, marshmallow creme, and butter extract.

In a bowl, add 3 tbsp cool whip, 1 tbsp marshmallow creme, and 1/2 tsp butter extract. Whip together all ingredients with a fork until it reaches a smooth consistency. Then set aside the bowl.

How to Make the Butterbeer Drink

The next part to make is the cool and refreshing soda portion of the Butterbeer. The ingredients you need for the Butterbeer drink portion are cream soda, butter extract, and butterscotch schnapps.

In your drinking glass, add 1 cup cream soda, 1/4 tsp butter extract, and 1/4 cup butterscotch schnapps. [If you’re making a non-alcoholic version, omit the butterscotch schnapps and add an extra 1/4 tsp of butter extract]. Stir together with spoon. I love all the delicious flavor that the butterscotch schnapps adds to the drink. This is just the right amount to add, giving it an extra sweetness without having a strong alcohol flavor.

Add the Topping to Butterbeer Drink

The last step is going to be add the topping to the Butterbeer drink. Scoop out the topping and add to the top of the drink. The topping will be a thick consistency so you will need to spread the topping evenly with a fork. Just keep spreading the topping mix out to the edges of the glass until it is even.

If you purchased the optional butterscotch or caramel syrup, you will then drizzle it on the top. And that’s it! You have a quick and easy glass of Boozy Butterbeer! This recipe makes for one glass of Butterbeer, but you can easily double the recipe to make more.
